Zena Sabbagh

Textile Designer

Visual and Fine Art teacher. Zena is a textile enthusiast, dedicated to documenting the traditional textile crafts in Syria. For the past 20 years she was focused on preserving and reviving the ancient Syrian block printing techniques.

She participated in many workshops in Lebanon and France to teach block printing as part of the traditional craft heritage. She started an initiative in 2008 in Aleppo, Syria to encourage the textile artisans to work with block printing with the aim to revive this craft.

Unfortunately, the conflict put an end to her efforts in Syria. She is currently running her own practice in Beirut, Lebanon where she works with Syrian refugee living in Lebanon.

She trains and provides them with transferable skills and dignified work. In her practice, Zena managed to modernize the craft of block printing and transform it to take a contemporary form and style.
